“We’ve already seen enough,” Mike whispered, his heart finally slowing down.

In the center of the room, Will sat strapped to a chair, his eyes rolling back until only the whites showed. He wasn't crying anymore; he was snarling. Joyce stood over him, her face a mask of maternal agony and steel-cold determination. She held a space heater—not as a tool for warmth, but as a weapon of exorcism.

Mike looked down at his hand. The black box was gone. Instead, he was holding a small, charred piece of a Dungeons & Dragons character sheet. It was a drawing of a Mind Flayer, but the ink was still wet, and it felt strangely warm to the touch.

The boys watched, paralyzed, as the episode played out around them in terrifying three-dimensional reality. They saw Jonathan frantically checking the locks while Nancy stood guard with a poker, her knuckles white. They felt the heat from the heaters rising, the temperature climbing to an unbearable degree.

The vacuum of the closing rift sucked the air out of the boys' lungs. They tumbled backward, falling through a tunnel of static and synthesized music. Thump.

The flickering neon sign of the Starlight Video rental store hummed with a low-frequency buzz that matched the static in Mike’s brain. It was 1984, but the air felt like it belonged to a different century entirely—something colder and much older. Behind the counter, a bored teenager with feathered hair didn’t even look up as the gang burst through the double doors. They weren't there for a comedy or a slasher flick. They were looking for a way to understand the shadow growing inside Will Byers.
