Imagine a young man named Cid who isn't interested in being the hero or the villain. He wants to be the "Power in the Shadows"—the mysterious background character who pulls the strings. In his mind, he is just playing a massive game of pretend. He recruits a group of beautiful, talented women (Shadow Garden), tells them a "fake" story about a cult of Diablos, and goes about his day acting out cool tropes.
Both are great, but the Japanese voice actor (Seiichiro Yamashita) captures the "trying-too-hard" energy of Cid perfectly.
He is a chuunibyou (a person with "eighth-grader syndrome") who accidentally stumbled into being a god-tier warrior. The humor comes from the gap between his roleplay and the high-stakes reality of the world.
