Dr. Vivien Morgan (Whoopi Goldberg), a computer scientist working on the "Kablooey Project," accidentally transports herself back to 589 A.D. during a lab mishap involving her laptop. Upon arrival in Camelot, she is initially sentenced to burn at the stake as a witch. However, using her knowledge of an upcoming solar eclipse—and the "magic" of her laptop and boombox—she convinces King Arthur of her powers.

Knighted as "Sir Boss," Vivien attempts to modernize the medieval kingdom by introducing inventions like flour mills and basic civil rights. Her presence creates friction with Merlin the magician and Sir Sagramore, leading to various adventures and a final joust before her eventual return to the present.
