The story follows Art Dodge (Banderas), an unsuccessful Miami art gallery owner drowning in debt. To solve his financial woes, he begins a scam involving wealthy widows, which eventually leads him to Betty Kerner (Griffith), a rich divorcee. However, Art quickly falls for Betty's more refined sister, Liz (Hannah). To date both sisters simultaneously, Art invents a sensitive twin brother named Bart, leading to a series of chaotic and "screwball" situations as he frantically switches between personas.
