During a harsh, isolated winter, Algren's journey of redemption begins:

Against Algren’s professional advice, the arrogant Imperial politicians send their half-trained, terrified peasant conscripts into battle against the samurai far too soon. The result is a slaughter. The story begins in the 1870s with (played by Tom Cruise). Algren is a bitter alcoholic, traumatized by his participation in the brutal massacres of Native Americans during the American Indian Wars. He survives by performing shamelessly in traveling gun shows. His life takes a drastic turn when he is approached by a wealthy Japanese businessman named Omura.
