Set in 1897 New Mexico and Mexico, Dead for a Dollar follows veteran bounty hunter Max Borlund ( Christoph Waltz ) as he is hired to track down Rachel Kidd ( Rachel Brosnahan ), the wife of a wealthy businessman who has supposedly been kidnapped by a Black soldier named Elijah Jones ( Brandon Scott ). : Borlund is tasked by businessman Martin Kidd (Hamish Linklater) to find his wife, Rachel, who has reportedly been abducted for ransom. Accompanied by Army sharpshooter Sgt. Alonzo Poe ( Warren Burke ), Borlund tracks them across the border into Mexico.

The story culminates in a series of violent confrontations. Martin Kidd kills Elijah Jones, only for Rachel to kill Martin in retaliation. Following a massive shootout between Borlund, Poe, and Vargas's gang, Borlund eventually faces off against his old rival, Joe Cribbens, and kills him in a quick-draw duel. Borlund, Rachel, and Poe survive and go their separate ways, with an epilogue noting that Borlund continued bounty hunting for the rest of his days.
