Irena Dubrovna, a Serbian fashion illustrator living in New York, lives under the shadow of an ancient legend from her home village. She believes she is a descendant of the "cat people"—women who, when consumed by passion or jealousy, transform into deadly panthers. This fear makes her terrified of physical intimacy, even after she falls in love with and marries a kind marine engineer named Oliver Reed.

Desperate to help his wife, Oliver sends Irena to a psychiatrist, Dr. Judd. However, Judd is skeptical of her "superstitions" and attempts to seduce her to prove her fears are groundless. His advances trigger the very transformation Irena feared. In the climax, a panther attacks and kills Dr. Judd in his office, though Irena is also mortally wounded during the struggle.
