The story follows three middle-school friends—Jake, Carson, and Bo—who feel they are outgrowing traditional trick-or-treating. They decide to spend Halloween night locked inside a newly opened store in a deserted strip mall.

However, they soon discover the store is haunted by the spirit of , a greedy land developer from the 1940s who was cursed by a local woman. Windsor's spirit possesses the store's animatronic decorations (including characters like Mr. Dark, Buzzsaw, and Nightcrawler) to hunt the children, aiming to possess one of their bodies so he can return to the living world. The boys, later joined by Carson’s older sister Kate, must use their wits to survive the night and defeat the spirit.
