Mort retreats to a secluded lakeside cabin in upstate New York to find solitude. His peace is shattered by the arrival of John Shooter (played by John Turturro), a mysterious and menacing farmer from Mississippi. Shooter accuses Mort of plagiarizing his short story, "Sowing Season," and demands that Mort "fix the ending". As Mort attempts to prove his innocence by locating a magazine that published his story first, Shooter begins a campaign of terror, killing Mort’s dog and eventually escalating to murder and arson.
