Below, the remnants of the Vanguard were pinned between the surging tide of the Shadow-Sworn and the sheer vertical drop of the canyon. They were out of time, out of arrows, and—until twenty minutes ago—out of hope.

“The frequency is shifting!” Elara shouted over the thunder, her fingers flying across the ancient console. “Kaelen, if you bridge the connection now, you aren’t just a conduit. You’re the ground wire. You’ll be the one the lightning finds first.” Kaelen stood on the precipice of the crumbling

When the light finally died, the silence was heavier than the thunder had been. Kaelen looked down at his shaking hands

The storm didn’t just break over the Ridge; it screamed. In the wake of the first half of the siege, the air felt ionized, tasting of ozone and wet iron.

The siege was over, but as the clouds parted to reveal a blood-red moon, they realized the storm hadn't been an attack. It had been a distraction.
