The film follows , a Civil War veteran who travels from town to town in 1870s Texas reading newspapers to illiterate locals. During his travels, he encounters Johanna (played by Helena Zengel), a 10-year-old girl who was taken by the Kiowa tribe as an infant and raised as one of their own.
