Fifteen years before the series begins, the ninjutsu master (Splinter) was exposed to a mysterious alien substance called mutagen while carrying four pet baby turtles. The contact transformed Yoshi into a humanoid rat and the turtles into human-turtle hybrids. Splinter raised them as his sons in the Manhattan sewers, training them in the art of ninjutsu to prepare them for a world that would fear their appearance. Major Story Arcs
