Mulan looked at the peaceful valley, then back at the man she loved. "You once told me that go too far from home and you lose your roots," she said softly, echoing his own words. "We have both gone too far. If we run now, the peace we bought with our friends' lives will vanish like rain." Mulan finally looked at him
Wentai sat beside her. Years ago, he had faked his own death to force her to find her own strength as a leader. He had seen her transition from a girl running away to save her father into a commander who could strategically let her best friends die if it meant saving the empire. The love they had fostered in the shadow
"The war is almost over," Wentai said. "The Rouran princess wants peace. But it comes with a price."
She didn't need to look up to know it was Wentai. He was the only one who saw the woman beneath the heavy armor, the only one who knew that every victory felt like a funeral.
