The project was recorded over several days in January 2020 at Sound on Sound Studios in Montclair, New Jersey. It is split into two volumes, featuring a rotating cast of over 30 world-class musicians, many of whom have been part of the band's decades-long residency in New York City.
This Grammy-nominated volume includes 11 tracks, such as "Work Song (Break the Chains)" and "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting". It features vocals and narrations by Charles's son, Eric Mingus .
