: Set during Lent, when meat was scarce, the story depicts a young "Unitarian" (the political opposition) who is captured by a mob of "Federalist" slaughtermen. He is humiliated and eventually dies at their hands, symbolizing the violent clash between what Echeverría viewed as "civilization" (the Unitarians) and "barbarism" (the Federalists).
