At the same time, the Air Force is transitioning from the older B-47 bombers to the massive new . Brennan initially plans to retire to take a high-paying civilian job, but he is eventually persuaded to stay and master the complex mechanics of these new "giants" that touch the sky.

The film follows (played by Karl Malden), a dedicated veteran ground crew chief stationed at a U.S. Air Force base. Brennan is a man of the old guard, deeply skeptical of the "new generation" of hotshot pilots—specifically Colonel Jim Herlihy (Efrem Zimbalist Jr.), whom Brennan remembers unfavorably from their service together in the Korean War.
