Hava Nagila Apr 2026

"Hava Nagila" is far more than just a wedding staple or a catchy earworm; it is a musical mirror reflecting the journey of the Jewish people over the last 150 years. Originally emerging from the shtetls of Ukraine as a wordless Hasidic melody known as a niggun , the song was designed to elevate the soul through repetitive, joyous sound. It wasn’t until 1918 in Jerusalem that musicologist Abraham Zvi Idelsohn added the now-iconic Hebrew lyrics—"Let us rejoice and be happy"—to celebrate the Balfour Declaration and a new sense of national hope.
