Go — Go

The foundational "five-through-four" syncopated rhythm is driven by bass drums, snare drums, and high-pitched hi-hats.

While it reached mainstream recognition with Brown's 1979 hit "Bustin' Loose," go-go remained heavily focused on the local scene. Bands like Rare Essence, Experience Unlimited (E.U.), and Trouble Funk became the sonic backbone of DC, Baltimore, and surrounding areas. More Than Music: Cultural Impact

Go-go was pioneered by DC legend , often known as the "Godfather of Go-Go." Looking to blend the energy of funk with Latin percussion and live crowd interaction, Brown created a sound that captured the energy of the streets.

A key component is the use of two standard congas paired with two smaller junior congas (8" and 9"), which provides a higher-pitched, melodic percussive sound.
