The band, known as , formed almost by accident. Knopfler reunited with his old musical partner from the 1960s, Steve Phillips , and their mutual friend Brendan Croker . Joining them were Dire Straits members Guy Fletcher on keyboards and manager Ed Bicknell on drums, with Paul Franklin providing masterful pedal steel work.
