The monks tell them the chilling legend of the Kiri Tengu (Mist Goblin), a winged demon that haunts the mountain on foggy nights. The goblin is said to have superhuman strength, supposedly breaking through walls to snatch people and hang them high in the temple's rafters. Conan notices a massive, high-ceilinged room with a small hole in the wall, which the monks claim was the site of a "goblin murder" two years prior.
The murderer is revealed to be Shunen , the youngest disciple. He was actually the brother of the monk who "disappeared" two years ago. He discovered that the head priest, Tenei, had murdered his brother using this exact same water trick and set out to exact revenge by killing Tenei in the same "impossible" way. Once the body was positioned, the killer smashed a hole in the wall to drain the water quickly, making it look like the goblin had broken in.
While driving through the mountains to see cherry blossoms, Kogoro Mouri (Richard Moore), Ran (Rachel), and Conan get a flat tire. Stranded, they find shelter at a secluded mountain temple called Sannoh Temple. The head priest, Tenei, and his four disciples—Kannen, Tonnen, Mokunen, and Shunen—initially try to turn them away but eventually agree to let them stay for a fee.
