Set in 1897, the film follows (Christoph Waltz), a principled bounty hunter hired by a wealthy businessman to find his "kidnapped" wife, Rachel Kidd (Rachel Brosnahan), in Mexico.
Once he finds her, Max realizes the "kidnapping" was actually an escape from an abusive marriage, and she is traveling with , a Black soldier who deserted to help her. Max is forced to choose between his contract and his conscience while being pursued by his old nemesis, Joe Cribbens (Willem Dafoe), and a local Mexican warlord (Benjamin Bratt).
