According to researchers from the MicroMundo Project, this "service-learning" approach does more than just find new bacteria; it builds a community that understands the "One Health" concept—the idea that human, animal, and environmental health are all connected.

Instead of a few scientists looking at a few samples, MicroMundo enlists thousands of "citizen scientists"—mostly secondary and high school students—to collect soil from their local environments.
