Set in 1914 at the dawn of World War I, the story follows a nameless young man—often referred to as —who travels to a remote island near the Antarctic Circle to serve as a weather observer. Upon arrival, he discovers his predecessor is missing and the only other resident is a deranged, misanthropic lighthouse keeper named Gruner .

Friend's first night in his isolated cabin is marked by a terrifying siege by humanoid sea creatures. After narrowly surviving, he is forced to seek refuge in Gruner’s fortified lighthouse.
