The story follows Antonio (Totò), a henpecked husband living in a small town, who is financially dependent on his wealthy but extremely geedry wife, Teresa (Titina De Filippo). To escape her stinginess and have some fun in Rome, Antonio and his barber friend Peppino (Peppino De Filippo) orchestrate a fake kidnapping. They send a ransom demand for five million lire, blaming a notorious local bandit known as "Il Torchio". The plan backfires hilariously when the real "Il Torchio" actually kidnaps Antonio, and his wife—believing it's still a scam—refuses to pay.
