"You have a corneal ulcer," the doctor said, shining a blue light into Leo's throbbing eye. "The fit was wrong, and the material wasn't breathable. You’re lucky we caught it before the scarring became permanent."
Five days later, a plain bubble mailer arrived. There were no brand names he recognized, but the lenses looked clear enough. He popped them in. At first, they felt okay—a little scratchy, maybe, but he figured his eyes just needed to adjust.
The "loophole" ended with an emergency room visit at 2:00 AM.
Leo picked a box, skipped the "Upload Prescription" button, and checked out.
By lunchtime, his eyes were pink. By dinner, they felt like they were filled with fine sand. He tried to take the lenses out, but they seemed stuck, suctioned to his corneas. When he finally peeled them away, his vision didn't clear. It got worse. Everything was shrouded in a milky fog.

Leo squinted at his laptop, the text on the screen a blurry mess of pixels. He had run out of his daily contacts two days ago, and the thought of booking an eye exam, sitting in that dark room, and paying for a new prescription felt like an exhausting hurdle he didn't want to clear. "There has to be a shortcut," he muttered.
Leo walked out of the hospital with a massive white patch over his eye and a prescription for expensive antibiotic drops. As it turned out, the "shortcut" was the longest, most painful route he could have taken.
