Bergen , born Belgin Sarılmışer, was a renowned Turkish Arabesque singer, infamously known as the "Woman of Sorrow" (Acıların Kadını) following her tragic life story and 1986 album of the same name. After being blinded by acid thrown by her husband, she became a poignant symbol of domestic violence awareness before being murdered by him in 1989.
