It begins at the Gotham City Museum of Fine Art, where the villainous Bookworm has replaced every painting with blank canvases. Commissioner Gordon flips the switch on the Bat-Signal, summoning Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson from a charity polo match. They race to the Batcave, slide down the Bat-poles, and roar toward the city in the Batmobile .

Batman deduces that Bookworm isn't stealing art—he’s rewriting history. The villain intends to use a "Literary De-Materializer" to suck the stories out of every book in the Gotham Public Library. In a classic cliffhanger, the Duo is trapped in a giant oversized book press, with the heavy iron lid slowly descending.
Naturally, Batman uses a miniature Bat-Laser hidden in his utility belt to weld the gears shut. They escape just in time for a final showdown at the library. The scene explodes with "POW!" and "ZAP!" graphics as Batman and Robin use their rhythmic, choreographed combat to dispatch Bookworm's henchmen. Batman delivers a stern lecture on the importance of literacy before handing the villain over to Chief O'Hara.
