Tamil Selvi and her mother, Kuruvammal, travel to town so Tamil can write her 10th-class public examination. However, their journey is marred when Tamil's father, Thavasi, is injured in an accident. Kuruvammal, deeply rooted in superstition, believes the accident is a divine punishment from the village deity, , for breaking customs.
