The story begins in the scorching New Mexico desert near Alamogordo, where State Police Sergeant Ben Peterson (James Whitmore) discovers a young girl wandering in a catatonic state. Following a series of mysterious disappearances and deaths, authorities bring in Dr. Harold Medford (Edmund Gwenn), a myrmecologist, and his daughter, Dr. Patricia Medford (Joan Weldon). They discover that radioactive fallout from the first atomic tests nine years earlier has mutated common ants into nine-foot-tall, man-eating monsters.
