Alocasia

The genus , part of the Araceae family, consists of over 100 species of tropical and subtropical perennials native to Asia, Southeast Asia, and eastern Australia. Commonly known as Elephant Ears or the African Mask plant , they are highly prized as ornamental houseplants for their dramatic, heart-shaped or arrow-shaped leaves that can range from a few inches to over three feet in length. While often grown for aesthetics, some species like Alocasia macrorrhizos (Giant Taro) have a history as an edible root crop in Oceania, though they require thorough cooking to remove toxic calcium oxalate crystals.
