The blowout happens in the parking lot. Katie finally admits she’s jealous—not of the internship, but of how easily Alexa seems to be moving on from the "bubble" that kept them together during the cancer years. Alexa realizes that while she was fighting to get her life back, she forgot that Katie’s life had been on pause right along with hers.

The story begins three months before graduation. Alexa, now completely in remission, is hyper-focused on the future. She has been accepted into a prestigious summer internship in New York City, a dream she’s had since before her first round of chemo. Katie, meanwhile, is grappling with the reality of staying behind to help her mom at the Wired Giant and attending the local community college to save money. Alexa & Katie (2018)2018

The resolution isn't about Alexa staying or Katie leaving. Instead, they spend the weeks leading up to graduation creating a "Legacy Box" for the incoming freshmen at their school who might be going through their own invisible battles. They include notes of encouragement, hidden snacks in the drama department, and a "Best Friend’s Guide to Survival." The blowout happens in the parking lot
